In Greek religion and mythology, Athena, also referred to as Pallas Athena, is the goddess of wisdom, courage, inspiration, civilization, law, justice, warfare, mathematics, strength, strategy, arts, crafts, and skill.  Minerva, Athena's Roman incarnation, embodies similar attributes.  Athena is the patron goddess of heroic endeavor, she was believed to have aided the heroes Perseus, Heracles, Bellerophon, and Jason.  She is the virgin patron of Athens.  The Athenians built the Parthenon on the Acropolis of her namesake city, Athens (Athena Parthenos), in her honor.
